Policy Statement

Curriculum for Excellence specifically refers to young people "developing a knowledge and understanding of the world and Scotland's place in it".   Therefore, international education can provide contexts for learning across the whole school and play a meaningful role in achieving all four of the Curriculum for Excellence aspirations - for young people to become successful learners, effective contributors, responsible citizens and confident individuals.

Mission Statement

Education and Cultural Services are committed to developing international education as an integral part of the education process by which people are made aware of international/global issues, come to appreciate cultural diversity, learn from others in an anti-racist society, develop their ability to articulate their beliefs in a reflective manner, learn to make judgments related to objective standards and are enable to play an active part - vocationally, socially, cuturally and politically - in an increasingly multicultural and international society.

To achieve this aim the proposed objectives are to:

  • establish an international education strategy group representing secondary schools, primary schools and cultural services;
  • undertake an audit of current provision in all our educational establishments;
  • develop a framework whereby international education is embedded in the curriculum and within the community;
  • develop a framework for monitoring and evaluation of international education.

This will enable young people and adults to:

  • be knowledgeable with regard to international/global issues and come to appreciate their own and other cultures;
  • be equipped with the skills, values and attitudes to keep them a part of the fast-changing world in which they live;
  • become impacted by and involved in international education within their educational establishments;
  • be enabled to engage in collaborative curriculum based work with partner/link schools overseas;
  • be aware of the importance of global as well as local citizenship;
  • be encouraged to participate and recognise that individuals' actions can effect change.
